Sorry guys I forgot to post…I guess it is just not thrilling any more to me as I have yet to get a penny item since the change! I refuse to buy a paper just to get the penny item.

The penny item coupon is now valid for one day –the day your ad begins (Wednesday or Thursday). The actual coupon can be found in the newspaper on your penny item day! Florida does not participate in the penny item promotion. Let me know if your store offers a different item

I haven’t gotten the penny item since the change either. Do you have any word on how this policy is effecting sales at Publix?
I’m not buying the Wed. paper, either. However, my store gave me the item last week without the coupon. Score!
Same here.. I am not going to buy a paper just to get the penny deal!!
Our paper ran a special recently where you could subscribe to only the Wed. and Sun. paper for a dollar a week, so we did that. Otherwise, there’d be no penny item for us either!
I agree that most weeks since the change haven’t been worth buying a $0.50 paper but, last week was a 5-lb bag of sugar and I don’t know where else you can get a 5-lb bag of sugar for $0.51.
I haven’t gotten it since the change either….I noticed a couple of weeks ago that there were TONS of the penny item, whereas there used to be a run on whatever the item was….but I, too, refuse to buy a paper to get one free item. Just not worth it!
I agree Michelle. I almost bought a paper last week but I searched it through before I bought it and I couldn’t find the coupon. So, I am not buying a paper when I can’t even find the coupon in it.
We are fortunate that our penny item coupon comes in the FREE paper (the local progress) on Wed. so we do not have to purchase a paper – and our store does not require the coupon. I have noticed though that the items seem to be lesser valued items since the change. I only started in November though so that may not be an accurate representation – but the items would ring up for about 4.98 each week….now the items have been about 2.98 each. I think the sugar was the most expensive item so far this year, but even it was only 3 something…I don’t say this to complain – just only an observation, because whether it is a $2 something or a $4 something, it is still a great deal at a penny.
Whenever I remember, I ask the cashier if I can get it if I dont have a coupon and they would key in the code for me.
I am lucky that my Publix doesn’t require the coupon. But Wednesday is a very inconvenient day for me, so if I don’t see the post on here before I leave for work (7:00am Central time) then I always call to see if it is worth stopping in to get the penny item. At least on Sundays, I could pick up my papers and a few good sale items to get up to $10 – so Sundays I could deal with – but Wednesdays, not so much.
Do you think switching the day was a way of reducing the number of free (well practically free) items that they give away; or was it a ploy to get more people in the door on Wednesday/Thursdays?
Check with your store. My store doesn’t require the coupon and I get it every week without!
there are ways to get the penny item without paying for a paper..
Most restaurant’s-& fast food joints (even public schools) have complementary papers for customers & students.

I am hoping they will change that policy back to the way it was. I agree with everyone else….not worth buying an extra paper for. I have not purchased the penny item since the change either. Hate to complain about something that’s free, but if the promotion isn’t working….
I too haven’t participated in the penny item since the day changed.What ticks me off,is that we get a free local paper on Thurs. & it always has the Publix ad,but w/o the Q.That sux!!!
I used to get the penny item every single week and have not a single time since the change. I too wonder how it’s affecting sales. Not only am I not going to buy the paper that day (we only get the Sat & Sun paper) but Wednesday is just not convenient for me to go the store like Sunday and Monday was.
Haven’t gotten the penny item since the new year–even though I’d still come out ahead even with buying a paper, I can’t bring myself to do it. Hope they change it back! I don’t mind the day being on Thursday, but I wish the penny coupon was still in the Sunday paper.
I’m with you; not buying a Wednesday paper (which around here is pretty pricey) just to get the coupon for the penny item. It doesn’t even register anymore!
I think it is funny, because I am one of those FL people that don’t get the penny item, but WED. is the day I often shop (the last day of the sale here)! It usually takes me that long to have my exact list and coupons together, since I only go once a week, and have to drag 3 babies with me!
Not buying a paper either. No more penny items for me. The only thing I would actually go out and purchase a paper for is Publix grape juice as the hubby drinks it faster than I can stock it. 🙂
I heard from the grape vine that Publix was going to do away with the penny item all together… I am not so sure of it but I would check into it. My stores that have been wishy~washy (dependant on the casher) are now all asking for the Q no. matter. what. Bummer! I loved that about Publix on Sunday’s!
My Publix doesn’t (or hasn’t yet) required the coupon for the penny item. I, like most of you, don’t get the paper on the weekdays and wouldn’t buy it just for the penny item.
Lets get together a boycot on the Penny Item and maybe they will see that it is not working and change it back to the way that it was before.
We haven’t got the Penny Item in weeks either. My store does require the coupon. I just can’t bring myself to buy a paper on Thursday and definitely refuse to subscribe.

I am with you there. I haven’t gotten the penny coupon either since the change. I sent an email to Publix corporate asking if they would have the coupon available on their website, but never got a response.
